Let’s Eliminate!

After Exploring, it is life-giving to Eliminate. To start with, if it’s not a clear yes, it’s a clear no. In order to laser focus on what God is calling you to do is answering the question: what will I say no to? This uncovers our true priorities in life. McKeown highlights a helpful five-step process:

  • Clarifying
  • Daring
  • Uncommitting
  • Editing
  • Limiting

First, clarify the top priority. This in and of itself will make a thousand decisions for you. Next, dare to say no. Without saying no, we will find ourselves inadvertently saying yes and being stretched thin and overwhelmed with our daily lives. The third step is uncommit. The common answer to “How are you doing?” for most people is busy. Too busy. So, to successfully eliminate we must be willing to step back and uncommit. The fourth and strategic step is editing, this is the act of seeing adjustment as a life-long process. If you step into something and find that it is not your calling, prayerfully and graciously step out of it. Finally, it is life-giving for you and me to view boundaries and limits as freedom. It is the liberation to go where God is calling and to tread confidently in that space!
